Harmony Korine by Val Kilmer
Harmony is hilarious. He views the downtrodden and hard luck cases without judgement, or makes a real effort not to, and is courageous in not giving in to the temptation that a character has to be only good, or bad…
I have found the beautiful woman who was recording with Dan Auerbach and friends – Valerie June. What a sweet creature she is. http://www.kickstarter.com/
So, What topics would you like to hear my doofus motivational speaker speak about? Harmony and I will review the answers, and lucky inquisitors could have their questions featured in the film. I am trying to work out a regular time to call winners personally, and answer them in character. If we have permission from you, we may use the recordings in the film. Dont’ be gross, but silly and colorful is good, like cotton candy.
We film in Nashville. I love Nashville. Apparently we had kin that owned a big farm long ago, but we lost it. Any one know any Kilmer history out there about the folks from the south?

I’d like to talk about medical insurance companies and pharmaceutical corporations. The medical insurance companies deem that “generic brands” are the solution as “this pill is like a one size fits all mentality?” An individual has to jump through hoops to get the name brand and pay a very high cost for it, even if allergies prevent the person from taking the generic. Generics have different binders and “excipients,” such as dyes and fillers which can be harmful to someone with drug sensitivities or allergies. Overall, generic drugs are actually produced by the same corporations that produce the name brands, because they own the generic manufacturing companies. Generics are cheaper in many instances because they are manufactured outside of the USA. Additionally, generics have only to prove bioequivalence but not their efficacy. There is no research testing for the effectiveness of a generic drug, for example: medications to prevent seizures.
Technically, generic is merely stating that the drug patent (after 20 years) has expired. Generic companies are not held up to the same standards that the original name brand had undergone. The FDA requires that the active ingredients and strength be the same as the name brand, but doesn’t pay attention to the binders and excipients used in the manufacturing of the generic drug. Also, your pharmacy will change manufacturers of a drug based on cost-effectiveness. One day your pill was yellow with flat surfaces, next time it’s yellow with rounded surfaces, or it’s a totally different color. If you don’t ask, they won’t tell you why. I’ve questioned many times the difference because I thought the pharmacy had given me the wrong medication. (I have been given the wrong medication a few times!!!! Of course, I’ve had to change pharmacies!)
Sure, even a name brand can be a problem, but once a name brand works for an individual, it becomes a health risk when medical insurances decide for you what pill you should be taking for your seizures, depression, blood pressure, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, etc. Almost done!
Prescribed drugs contain sodium which helps with the drugs absorption into our bodies. In my opinion, most Americans and Residents in the USA consume enough salt (sodium) beyond the daily equivalent that it seems unnecessary to add it to the majority of drugs, prescribed or even over the counter. I state this message because depending on the drug, an individual can suffer greatly from sodium overload in their body which creates fluid retention, then pain which creates an inflammatory response from the body, creating more fluid retention. I’ve experienced this and I’m sure I’m not the only one and I can only say that the medical professionals are “oblivious” as to what to do and they were mute about the sodium used in medication, although they would tell me to avoid salt. I also developed a sensitivity to sulfate, so when my symptoms became worse with the additional fluid retention and painful legs and back…..the medical professionals were still “oblivious!!” Thank goodness for my computer and the internet where I was able to research my problem areas. It has saved me from continuing to live in a “hellish” pitfall of medical insurance companies and pharmaceutical corporations who care less about human beings when their main concern is “to have 1000% in profits!!”
Thank you for listening!!

I like the fact that your kin had a farm long ago in Nashville – they sound like hardy folk. So …. here’s my question/discussion topic: if it were 200 years ago, and you were living comfortably somewhere in the eastern United States, would you have the gumption to get a wagon and head out west? What separates those who can do something like that versus others who are not able to take such risks and how does that apply to people today?

In a scene in the film ‘Fat City’ when S.Keach and S.Tyrrell are sittin down to work on some pan fried steaks, S.Keach goes to put some ketchup on his plate and instead of slowly coming out a la anticipation it rifles out like a volcano. He is crushed with disappointment and rage.
Beyond the hundreds of times i rewatched this sequence in a short period in context with my first viewing of the picture whereby I was unable to not burst out like a hyeena laughing – i since put the film away – specifically going to it in the darker, sadder times in my life – not so much as to raise my spirits – but rather to see if in a depressive state it was possible that i would not break out with convulsive laughter. I have never once been able to contain myself irrespective of mood – recently i rushed home directly following a funeral of a close loved one – no change.
My question – as a pre-eminent motivational speaker I would like to get your expert opinion on what ‘motivates’ me to howl like one of the central park wilding gang with laughter here – on the surface it is an extraordinarily minor action which occurs – and also it clearly causes pain and frustration to the eater. I should instead wince with empathy.
Do i need help?
2nd Question – What ‘motivates’ Otis Rush to sound out a gutteral wail the likes of which is beyond categorization in the alternate take of ‘Your Breaking My Heart’ (track 9) off of Cold Day In Hell – surely this goes beyond even the most devastating heartbreak – could he possibly be trying (consciously or unconsciously) to be communicating with as you say ‘the fourth dimension?’
Thanks in advance Hector.

There is some people that believe on weird things and claim that everyone have an “outer-person”, which is the one that acts and respond to the world, and an “inner-person”, which is the one that is truly you, it is hiding deep inside of you and it is happy because is capable to be itself. So these weird believers say that unhappy people is unhappy because their “outer-person” is bad and horrible, that unhappy people should leave their “outer-person” and search for their “inner-person” to be able to be like it, being themselves and be happy again.
But my question is: What happens when you leave your outer-person to go to your inner-person and find out that your inner-person is even worse than your outer-person, and you run back to your outer-person to get a hug and your outer-person doesn’t want to give a hug and ignore you completely? …
You know there are weird believing’s out there, like that guy Willey Brooks and his Breatharian lifestyle. He was claiming that perfect health and happiness was possible through Breathaism. He say that living ONLY on AIR without ANY food happiness was possible… so I wonder, How many of these people that actually followed this movement were happy when they were at the hospital with their internal organs shutting down for the lack of FOOD??? This is kinda sad, but also somehow funny. I can’t believe that people actually followed this guy….. what were they thinking?!!!…
So it would fun to hear about “weird believing’s” ……

Keeping in mind that the theme is “What would this doofus motivational speaker talk about”, I wanted to submit this idea. What if the guy talked about how to get ahead (in life, at work, etc.) by doing as little as possible. Having worked in the corporate environment for nearly 20 years, and going through many hours of motivational speaking: business-related and personal-related, sometimes it actually does seem that the folks that tell their bosses they CAN’T do something are the ones applauded and the work horses that have the “can do” attitude are left to carry the load, do the work, but aren’t brought in for the vision meetings. Something along the lines of “Earn more and do less by admitting your own weaknesses.”

I think what issue I would like to see addressed is how can people be motivated to be considerate of the feelings and needs of others? I have found that 60 percent of people are not considerate of others especially if there is not anything in it for them or if their life is not effected by the need to consider someone else.
I am a light sleeper and that is a blessing and a curse, so is if a person who is a sound sleeper. If people who live around me don’t chose to be quiet so I can sleep, it’s living hell for me until I can be somewhere I can sleep. This is a tough thing to do because people think why should they care about the other guy.

I was just listening Muse – Supermassive Black Hole vs. Rage Against the Machine, Testify. Now, I like their video of this song, in which they show both side of the coin: one side is the reach and powerful poli-tics, and the absence of their moral sense, and the other side is the reality of the world with the hunger, devastation, and poverty.
So, they TESTIFY for what? Everything is the same since I remember…
I mean..common… what is happening in Somalia right now?
Children are dying from hunger and diseases. The U.N has to choose what child receives help because for many of them is too late, once starvation is too advanced, in reality, there is nothing that can be done, on this stage of starvation organs are already dead inside the body, so the U.N. has to focus on the ones that still have the chance……this is a heart breaking situation.
What is wrong with people on this world?
While millions of euros are wasted on a stupid royal wedding and the trip for the newlyweds, children are dying of starvation in Africa….mmmm
Where is our sense of morality?
Like we would say in my country (Argentina) “las pelotas with the royal wedding”…. Go and feed those children!!!
On my postings I went from dummy questions, through education and weird beliefs, but it also would be nice to hear about this “moral issue” that is been eternal since ancient times…. We call ourselves human beings, but after I saw the news yesterday, I started doubting about our humanity…..
I have one last question, not related to this subject, How are you gonna call people if no-one is leaving phone#’s????…..Just saying… curiosity, you know?…..

Maybe you could talk about why so many people believe that “everything happens for a reason!” I believe in “free will” so I’m more apt to think that incidences in life happen by chance, accidentally, coincidentally, and luck rather than God’s will or a person’s karma (karma is usually stated when something negative has happened so that when someone is successful I don’t hear anyone saying, “wow, he/she must have great karma!!”) Just thought it might be a subject to pursue and I think this topic could contain some great, comical moments.

6. Cancer and the Chemotherapy farce (speaks for itself) Horrific death vs organic life
7. The Cholesterol natural cure and the plight of the Drug Companies Vs Red Yeast Rice and other natural cures.
8. The FDA and the need for a new policing system vs. corporate America via the natural food market, corn syrup, salt, sugar etc. “your killing me with corn syrup”
9. Is the default crisis really averted..the 14th temporary cure vs. an immediate sell out and the death of the middle class. “3rd party greatness, America’s new start”
10. Organic growing VS GMO”s and pesticides “What will our insides look like?”
11. Can Women do a better Job of running America? No more nuke’s…abolishing the Fed’s an offshore corporation, People Vs Corporate America, How the banking industry has made slaves of the American people. “America..Out of Work”

I was hanging out with my college friends today, and as we were having breakfast at Cracker Barrel, I realized that people was uncomfortable with our behavior. We weren’t misbehaving but being ourselves. We are happy girls and it seems that our happiness bothers to the surrounding people. I also noticed that when we are hanging around (girls’ day out), we drag many mean looks to ourselves, for example: we took our friend Crystal out for her birthday to the zoo, and then to the New Gate Mall in Salt Lake City, UT. We had a meal in a Brazilian grill and had chocolate cake that we couldn’t finish, so we took it we us, and then we ended having a chocolate cake war in the middle of the mall (this is an outdoor mall). People was throwing bad looks at us, like being ourselves was a crime, of course we didn’t care and don’t care what people think. We like to be happy every day, but it seems the people have lost the ability to be happy and have fun like children do. My friends and I are loud, unpredictable, we laugh hard and loud and we like to jump over flowers pots and take dummy pics anywhere. SO, Is it bad to be like that? what has happened with society and people? Is it more important to be running all the time to work, to school, driving here and there, leaving days and years go by? Life is only one and it is short, so live laugh, love that’s our philosophy, but it seem that it doesn’t match with today’s society…….

Dear Hector,
I’d love so much if you would let us know more about on how the power of emotions is related with the power of the objects. I already found a kind of answer… “Here is a piece of earth. If you stand staring at it and doing nothing, what does the earth yield? Nothing. Just like a woman.” LUIGI PIRANDELLO, Liolà
Few questions:
How much time do I have to spend far away from my deep emotions to find again my real me?
Is the not-vegan blue nail polish provides negative forms of energy to my aura, image, or persona?
“Another way of balancing your Energy is through B: 1.Recognition—recognizing the problem. 2. Surrender and Release—putting trust in the highest power, letting go of trying to control how your life will manifest. It is releasing how we think things should be, and knowing that he Divine Source will take control.” How could I ever know if the Divine Source will be on strike the day I’l be calling it?
In which case would I use convenient amnesia to others?
If I have to sell the most unwatchable artwork in the world, what should I do first?
My dog is quite depressed: is the fourth dimension might look like a concrete cure for him?
What time is it? (I mean, in the fourth dimension)
Thanks so much, it was a great fun.
Good luck and good work.

I apologize for my earlier post. It seems I fell into the fugue of the morose and maudlin earlier. You asked for silly and colorful, like cotton candy. . .
How about Teletubbies on the Jersey Shore? And instead of that cesspool of a hot tub, they have a large cotton candy machine. The colorful cast of characters would include the pink teletubbie with an overly round bottom named Snookie, who is a bambakokapoetaphile (lover of cotton candy, hence her color and round bottom), and her equally colorful green nemesis Mike’s Gotta Situation, who is a bambakokapoetaphobe (fear of cotton candy). I think we should keep the purple Tinky Winky with his deviant purse (filled with Jolly Ranchers, to be outed on a later episode) and round it out with Nod, that dreamy yellow character with his head in the clouds and his eyes on the stars.
Thank you for the chance to amend. Now how to apologize to the study of psyche and the Greek language?

To use this machine – I am referring to the concept of the Chronoscope projected by Pellegrino Ernetti and partly by Enrico Fermi – you would have the chance to create a database by images. Why?
These images should be related to the different cases that Hector could recall while he’s busy talking about the various topics he already chosen. Hope you guys don’t mind some more questions….
What about ageism? I’m getting up in years. Chronologically 58, but still think like I was in my late 30s. I took a course in adult psychology around 55….the only one in the class, more than double the age of other students. My professor asked me “at what age do I think at?” Thought I’d be laughed at but I said it anyway, I told him 35. He said, “thats normal!!!” (whew). So, why is it that older people are thought of as suddenly having no interest in sex, or frowned at for looking at someone with a great body whether they are young or older!?!? Besides the fact, that suddenly I’m thought of as not able to understand a conversation, or hard of hearing so that someone feels it necessary to raise the volume in our conversation. Oh and God forbid, I still would like to go out dancing (love unchained melody). Don’t get me wrong, there is a drawback with age…..less energetic and stamina, tales me longer to get motivated and get myself going to start my day, have aches and pains that are hard not to think about, and forgetting, when I’d forget when I was younger it never phased me…..now that I’m older it bothers me to no end….LOL Anyhow, I’m not dead yet and I feel I still really do have a lot of living to do!!!

Doris – I hope you win! Your question does fall into the “sweet and colorful” category – like cotton candy! Looking forward to what Hector will say, but as for my two-cents worth, between the pink and white snowballs, I think it depends on whether the food coloring used is listed on the cancer-causing agents list. But what the heck, I love food so it probably doesn’t matter – it’s all good!

The big bang theory was invented by a Catholic priest who was a physicist and the Pope canonized it as the evidence that all things were created at one time by one creator. Einstein and scientist at the time dismissed the theory as ridiculous. Later some scientist began to think it is plausible and adopted it as an evolutionary theory. Then the religious people dismissed it as ridiculous. So how can the biggest “answer” to the beginning of everything be “true” only for the group that claims it and false by the other later? Is it a law of quantum physics that reality only exists when someone believes it or is it that people are just kids fighting over whose football it is? Me confused and that is the way I like it.

I would love to hear about individual’s first love…I’m speaking about “puppy love!” We’ve all experienced it. In so many ways, most of us can learn from it as well. Over the years, based on “my puppy love,” I learned how important it was to be in the same room with someone and be happy about it.
This boy wasn’t athletic, nor a bookworm, but no pushover either. He was nice and kind and he wasn’t a snitch! I can’t remember when we weren’t in the same class together throughout our years of attendance at a catholic elementary school.
We were in the third grade and it was Valentine’s Day. At home the night before, I got an envelope (nope, no card-didn’t make one either) and shook out “sweetheart candies” from a big bag of them. I didn’t count how many and didn’t check to see what the messages were on each of them. It was the middle of the night and I was hiding what I was doing and didn’t want to get caught. I put the envelope in my book-bag and went back to bed.
The next day before I went to class, I went to the girl’s bathroom (no one was there). I got my envelope put his name on it and sealed it. Before class attendance was taken, I made sure to place his envelope on his desk in front of him. He looked at me and said thanks! When I got to my desk, he had already opened it and was eating the candy (something a catholic nun would frown upon). Wow, I was in heaven!

Hector, how do you motivate a schizophrenic? One persona just happens to be a slasher emo…
I’d like for you to run through your credentials as a motivational speaker?
Also, what motivates you to motivate?
Character curious. Scenarios…
Were you a bored millionaire that decided to “share your knowledge with the masses” (of course at a cost, and you would obviously be making money from naive, out of luck, hopeful and desperate for guidance?
Or are you the motivational speaker that is themselves convinced that they are making a difference by giving advice to other people that solicit it… (Like that old lady that runs a shop that has advice on everything because they’ve seen it all, heard it all, lived through it all)… possibly slightly delusional – you tell us.
Are you well suited, with a forced sinister grin?
Are you a preacher believing in the potential in everyone?
Are you a delusional high achiever that wants to tell everyone else what they should be doing to be more like you?
Are you an opportunist filling your koffers?
Can you be all of this at once?
Love love love concepts forming…
Oh just to be silly: “Mr Motivational speaker, how would you open a can of whoop @ss?”

A message to Mr. Kilmer .
(Subtitle: seeing the efforts made with such generosity by every person who have joined this forum, I’m wondering if you would ever call/write in person to all of them and say just “Thank you for the help”. In any case, winner personalities or not, it would be an act of exquisite kindness from you.)
Have you ever considered Robert Musil and his novel ‘Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften’ (The Man Without Qualities) as an inspiring text for your current project?
As far as I am concern, Musil anticipated the existence of your Hector in many ways.
When he describes in details the main character of his novel, the 32 years old Ulrich, we discover not a ‘cotton-candy’ male personality but the naked truth on how ‘a man without qualities’ should look like and interact with the world around him. This is a point of view that I would put in relation with Hector – and partly with all the interesting ideas and suggestions you’ve have been received in the forum of yours. Here we go…
About Ulrich:
‘For a long time now a hint of aversion had lain on everything he did and experienced, a shadow of impotence and loneliness, an all-encompassing distaste for which he could not find the complimentary inclination. He felt at times as though he had been born with a talent for which there was at present no objective.’ [...] ‘His appearance gives no clue to what his profession might be, and yet he doesn’t look like a man without a profession either. Consider what he’s like: He always knows what to do. He knows how to gaze into a woman’s eyes. He can put his mind to any question at any time. He can box. He is gifted, strong-willed, open-minded, fearless, tenacious, dashing, circumspect—why quibble, suppose we grant him all those qualities — yet he has none of them! They have made him what he is, they have set his course for him, and yet they don’t belong to him. When he is angry, something in him laughs. When he is sad, he is up to something. When something moves him, he turns against it. He’ll always see a good side to every bad action. What he thinks of anything will always depend on some possible context—nothing is, to him, what it is: everything is subject to change, in flux, part of a whole, of an infinite number of wholes presumably adding up to a super-whole that, however, he knows nothing about. So every answer he gives is only a partial answer, every feeling an opinion, and he never cares what something is, only ‘how’ it is—some extraneous seasoning that somehow goes along with it, that’s what interests him.’
——————————————————————————————————————–
About the amount of information of his (and our) time and the incapacity to manage all of them:
‘A man today who still aspires to integrity deserves a lot of credit,’ Walter said.
‘There’s no such thing anymore,’ Ulrich countered. ‘You only have to look in a newspaper. It’s filled with an immeasurable opacity. So many things are being talked about, it would surpass the intellectual capacity of a Leibniz. But we don’t even notice; we have changed. There’s no longer a whole man confronting a whole world, only a human something moving about in a general culture-medium.’
Thanks and goodbye.
P.S.
To the kind attention of Mrs. Doris T.
If you don’t mind, let’s turn over the issue of yours in a democratic as more complete view.
What about the ‘youngeism’? When you’re affected by a chronic lack of wisdom, you’re not particularly gifted with patience, and you’re not aged enough to enter in the senior category, so… What a young human being should do then? Ummh… While we, the young people, are waiting for aging, I think that reading a massive amount of what the art of written works offer to us all is still one of the best cares. It works even for the aged ones…

@noemivh I’m from SLC too (well actually a small town an hour north of Salt Lake, Ogden). @hector I grew up mormon, went for 2 years on a mormon mission to the praries of Canada. I’m no longer involved in the mormon church, and moved to Los Angeles 6 years ago, where I make jewelry for a living. I just entered a beard and mustache competition, where I was crushed to find that my (what I thought was majestic) puny beard stood no chance of winning. Any motivational speaches regarding coming to terms with the loss of both my herritage and manhood would be appreciated.

As perhaps a not always motivational, motivational speaker, seeing Hector address problems that people have because of others people’s problems. For example, someone may have erectile dysfunction and it ruins their entire outlook on life because they can’t get it up or someone so morbidly obese that mold forms in their rolls from lost cotton candy. But what about the people that have to put up with other peoples problems? They need to be motivated out of the misery of dealing with other folks’ misery. Does that goes as far as pointing out misery boy #1′s problems to misery boy #2 by saying, “Hey, at least you can get it up so put a chin in that grin and give me my $50 for making you smile.” Do you motivate the people that are stuck on the bottom of the barrel or the people floating on top that actually have a chance of getting out?

A few things…first how about how people take their life for granted? As a breast cancer survivor, I learned the hard way, when you’re faced with dying, you really realize how lucky you are…You learn to slow down and appreciate everything in your life. Lifes to short.
And another related subject…and most of us survivors feel this way. We feel there is a cure for cancer. After you go through it, you realize how cancer is a big business. Right down to the bandaids they put on your arm after drawing blood…it all makes big money. Did you know that each chemo is like almost $5 grand? I had 16 treatments. My insurance company (who by the way pays a reduced amount then someone without insurance would) has paid upwards of $300,000……..Do you realize the money that would be lost if a cure were to be announced? How’s that for love for your fellow man. Keep a disease that has the power to kill you around to profit off of it. After decades of research, trillions and trillions of dollars spent on research, no cure? We put a man on the moon and cannot cure cancer? Yea right, got a luxury hotel I’ll sell ya in Goshen, Ohio……LOL

Hector? Harmony? Anyone else on this message board realize how absolutely creative the photo of Harmony (taken by Hector’s alter ego) actually is? The plastic bag, which could represent garbage/trash, is juxtaposed against the extremely shiny, spic and span cleanliness of the desk/conference table. What hidden messages could this imply? Or is it simply a great idea on how to post your photo when you really don’t want others to see your whole body …… like on a dating site when you have to post a photo but being too honest might jeopardize your chances? There you have it: a motivational speech on when honesty is the best policy and when it’s ok to, you know, fib a little!

Dear Harmony and Val,
My root question is: What do you think is the best way to view our time here on this Earth for the sake of our extended happiness and productivity? Although we live in a world where time is seen as linear: simply here… and gone…would you in any way view this as a counterproductive frame of mind although it is how we have all been trained to think?
For example, while sorting through photos shortly after I lost my mother I would see photos of myself as a child (and as completely strange as this may sound) the thought popped into my head, ‘I feel bad for that little girl’. However, what I was really thinking about was the nature of our time: about how much in our personal lives and in the world around us changes over time… about how much we ourselves change over time… and our deep, often mournful feelings for the past for various reasons. The little girl in the photo is me. I am the same although I have greatly changed. But am I really the same at all? Biologically speaking, cells in my body have regenerated and altered over years, my mind has new and changed thoughts, I have new likes and dislikes…etc.
These thoughts saddened me and this downtrodden image of time gives me a chill now and then. It has been about two years since I started rolling those thoughts around. Do you think it’s possible to be able to view our time any other way to benefit ourselves?

Hey, sounds like a fun project. I have a few questions for Harmony?
1. How can one be saved from the hour of sin (when it literally overtakes us and wells up inside us and we enivitably sin)?
2. Is the criminal mind really worth reformation?
3. Lastly, is America antisemitic- because we say that we are Israel’s allies but yet we tell them to give up Jerusalem and that maybe the most important issue at hand? Shalom (pray for the peace of Israel).
Thank you, this is lots of fun, I would love for you to post some answers, Harmony!
I have to say that I do try and keep up with most of your projects and knew when you were doing the film at the skating rink in Tennessee but I didn’t see this link until yesterday, so
I thought I’d chime (even if it’s after the fact).
Hope this helps, lots of luv
XO Dawnie

Hector,
I do not want to know the meaning of life or get an answer to a deep philosophical question…I just want to know how to look good at a business lunch. I have several physical imperfections, so sometimes this is hard to achieve. I need you to motivate me to overcome my shortcomings and succeed.
The problem is that, besides my lazy eye, I have big, ugly moles on my face, a bump under my nose, bad complexion, overlapping front teeth, a terribly sunken chin, and bad posture. My face does have one talent: I can drag my left upper lip up into an Elvis-like sneer that greatly impresses my mother and my coworkers…but not my boss.
Also, as much as I try to emulate Hillary Rodham Clinton, I look horrid in a pants suit because I have large thighs and a globby %$# the size of Delaware (hey, at least I’m honest)…As an aside, I have pictures of all of this if you need them to help you help me.
Hector, what can you say to help me turn this around?
